Watch to 5K App Expands with 10K Plan in Latest Update
Indie Developer Adds New Features to Help Users Transition from 5K to 10K
Watch to 5K, the go-to Apple Watch app for beginner runners, just got a major upgrade. With the release of Version 6.0, the app now includes a much-anticipated 5 to 10K Expansion Plan. This new feature is designed to help users move beyond 30-minute runs and conquer a full 10K in just eight weeks.
Created by indie developer Ben Callis during the lockdown, Watch to 5K quickly became popular among novice runners looking for a simple, phone-free way to train for a 5K using just their Apple Watch. The app follows the Couch to 5K (C25K) program and operates independently on the Watch, letting users leave their phones behind while they run.
What’s New in Version 6.0:
- 8-Week 10K Program: Perfect for those who’ve completed the 5K and are ready for the next challenge. This structured plan gradually builds your stamina to take on a 10K.
- Three Runs a Week: The new plan mixes up your week with base runs, long runs, and recovery runs, ensuring you build endurance without overdoing it.
- Distance Goals: In addition to time-based goals, the 10K plan introduces distance-based targets, adding variety to your training sessions.
- Achievement Milestones: Hit new distance milestones and unlock achievements to keep you motivated as you progress.
- Voice Coach: Get real-time updates on your progress at every kilometer during distance runs, helping you stay on track.
- Special 10K Icon: A new app icon for Version 6.0 symbolizes your progress and celebrates your next big goal.
What Makes Watch to 5K Stand Out:
- Built for Apple Watch: Runs independently without the need for your iPhone, and even includes Watch face complications so you can monitor your progress and launch the app quickly.
- iPhone Companion App: Track your progress, review detailed run stats, and celebrate milestones with bespoke illustrations. It even integrates with Apple Health to store your sessions and contribute to your activity goals.
- Listen While You Run: Works seamlessly with your preferred music or podcast app, dipping volumes for instructions and updates. Plus, it signals when you’ve hit the halfway point, so you know when to head back.
We designed Watch to 5K to be as user-friendly as possible, especially for beginners who might be new to running,” said Callis. “I’m thrilled to finally add the 10K plan, which our users have been asking for. I can’t wait to see how it helps them reach new milestones.
The 5 to 10K Expansion Plan is available as a one-time in-app purchase for £3.79 and can be accessed from the settings menu in the iPhone companion app.
Origin of Watch to 5K
“During lockdown, I started running to get outside and get healthier. I wanted a simple Couch to 5K app that worked independently on the Apple Watch, without needing to carry my iPhone. When I couldn’t find one that met my needs, I decided to build it myself. After months of development and completing my first 5K, I launched Watch to 5K as an independent Watch app,” shared Callis.
